I recently got shadowbringers during the steam sale for $15 bucks and decided to give the game another shot. After installing and booting it up, the screen would start flashing after a few seconds and become unplayably slow. I did some googling, decided it must have been freesync causing the issues, and globally disabled it. After that, I got a pretty stable 70 or so fps. I then tried to run the game in borderless mode so I could multitask better, and got 10 fps.
Understandably, I couldn't play the game like that. I did some googling, and gave up on fixing borderless window mode and just dealt with "only" having 70fps.
So today for shits and giggles I decided to try and fix borderless window mode by playing around with a bunch of settings. I did the following stuff:
After just these three things, everything works perfect. I have borderless window selected, but my fullscreen option (2560x1440 144 fps) was giving the same ~150 fps while in the wild areas and ~100 fps in gridania aetherite plaza with a bunch of people afk. I don't know why this worked, I suspect it has something to do with having conflicting global settings with game settings.
One thing I did notice was that the ffxiv game profile in my graphics menu doesn't actually affect the game that is launced by the new shortcut I made. I HAVE to use the alt+R menu in the game to get the menu for the version of the game that is launched by that new shortcut.
Anyway, I am typing this out because I was INCREDIBLY disappointed with the performance of the game of my sysytem, and thought the game was just too spaghetti to work properly on modern systems or something. I hope this post can possibly help anyone else with similar issues. It was a real shame that a bunch of garbage graphics driver settings was holding me back from enjoying the undoubtedly tireless work the devs put into the presentation of this game.

So today for shits and giggles I decided to try and fix borderless window mode by playing around with a bunch of settings. I did the following stuff:
- Created a shortcut to the ffxivboot64.exe and added the "-issteam" condition to it's target parameters in the shortcut properties menu. I did this just in case steam was interfering with my fps somehow. I had already tried disabling the steam overlay in the steam settings for the game, and that hadn't fixed my performance issues.
- I went into the AMD drivers menu (alt+R to bring up the overlay in game) and looked at all my settings. I noticed that I had radeon chill enabled in ffxiv, but not globally, so I turned it off in both the game menu and the global settings.
- I used the same driver menu (alt+R in game) to enable freesync in both the game settings menu and the global settings menu. I made sure to used the "On" setting in the freesync option menu instead of AMD optimized.
