The residents of Everkeep and in the town around it beneath the dome wear regulators which contain spare souls that have to be harvested from the living.
They essentially can’t die because they always have extra souls unless they die of old age or disease, or they run out of spare souls.
When they do actually die, like Namikka, a digital copy of them is made from their memories in Living Memory, where they become Endless, and function forever, so long as they have enough aether.
Living Memory itself is the top floor of Everkeep that was cut off from the rest of the tower when it fused with the Source and remains on Alexandria’s home shard.
The dome over Alexandria was erected centuries ago by the shard’s reckoning. They were stuck on their shard until Zoraal Ja made a deal with Sphene in the Skydeep Cenote and returned the key to her in exchange for being their king and commanding their high tech army.
With the key back in her possession, Sphene successfully fuses Alexandria with the Source.
By their reckoning this event happened 30 years ago. But to us, it happened today.
