First of all, I am only making this post because when in both of my old FCs people would make a big deal about HW for new players and even sometimes shade SB. This post main point is to hopefully at least bring a moment of unity with any others of similar opinion to title.
With that being said. There really is no major fault with HW. I completely understand why it carries such weight for much of the vocal community. It just barely connected with me. Spent the first half of HW being surrounded by people that annoy me (except Haurchefant), and the second half surrounded by people that frustrate me (except Aymeric). Spent the whole HW expansion brute forcing my way through every problem/ conversation because I am the WOL and my new best friend is Stabby Estinien. The only time I felt like a "good" hero was when the people of the Brume were involved.
SB on the other hand approached the theme of "Just cause" with a ton more nuance. Almost every named enemy you fight has a purpose/ goal they are fighting for besides simple eradication of the other side. Yes, this was true for some of HW but it is overbearingly present in SB. Every time you raise your sword in SB it's either a battle of dreams or traditions, or both. I also liked that the final boss lacked all that. Like dude is just a plain old bad guy villain without much available depth. Beating him was the like the game saying "Now that you have unified the region, you must end the physical embodiment of the word 'conflict'"
TL;DR In HW you play the FF version of Kratos, where anyone that says no to you gets to see a melee DPS limit break up close. In SB you and the Leveilleurs are handed a puzzle of international, cultural, and oppression pyramid relations, and told to figure it out. You actually spend time "figuring things out".
