Class Quests: 9/10 Fun to play: 6/10 Complexity: 2/10 Depth: 2/10 Levelling: 10/10
TLDR: Machinist is a very simple class designed around easy management and an easy rotation. It leaves it easy to learn, very easy to level thanks to a number of powerful early tools, and a very stable rotation that doesn’t change much as you acquire new skills. Machinist is a fantastic pickup for anyone just getting into Heavensward, especially anyone new to the DPS role. To top it off the class quests are a lot of wholesome underdog adventures. I highly recommend the class, but be warned that it’s simplicity can be dull at times, so be sure you’re seeking a more laid back experience.
Introduction: Machinist is a class with a very standard rotation, occasionally lapsing into moments of very high APM when their overheat is available. You summon robots and drills, and use your suite of tools along with your firearm to burn through enemies with incredible speed. Otherwise, you simply use your abilities as they come up, which makes the class easy to learn and fun to play, with little cost to try starting at level 30.
Class quests: Machinist 30-60: Machinist really sells the underdog narrative that runs through each of the Heavensward classes, with a scrappy group of grease monkeys in over their heads and continually being pushed back and pushed around by Ishgard’s strict systems. Seeing them achieve the respect and confidence they deserve through the various tribulations is genuinely touching, and most of all it really feels like you’re a key component of an awesome team. Absolutely loved these quests. They aren’t the deepest in the world, but they’re fun, and I was always looking forward to returning to the manufactory to see what we would be up to this time.
Fun to play: Machinist is fun in a familiar sort of way. What I mean by that is that as you level up, your rotation and play style change very little. You almost always have your most important tools at any level sync, and your rotation is the exact opposite of Black Mage, meaning you almost never have to rearrange or reorganize yourself around new abilities. It’s a very relaxing experience, with consistently powerful AOE and good single target. I found machinist’s simplicity a touch boring at times throughout my levelling, but in the end it’s a good class for situations where you want AOE and peloton, the ideal combo for levelling and dungeons in general. It’s very APM heavy with its overheat system, so keep that in mind when you’re choosing to pick it up. That fact leaves this strange contrast of fairly slow play ramping up in an instant to button mashing to keep up with Gauss Round and Ricochet.
Complexity: I personally believe that Machinist is the lowest complexity class in the game. Few oGCDs, little resource management, a simple rotation with instant casts, and very little party support. This isn’t a bad thing, as Machinist fills a niche of simple classes that this game tends to lack, as many DPS classes can be relatively intimidating to pick up and play. It’s just easy to learn, fun to spam spread shot. The only real caveat to all of this is that starting at level 30 has it's own small learning curve, but it's by far the least intimidating of any of the DLC classes.
Depth: Once again, there really isn’t a lot to talk about here. Machinist seems to be intentionally designed to be accessible, which means it’s a great class to learn content on, or to learn DPS as a role if you are a tank or healer main. Tactician, machinist’s defensive buff, is it’s only real thinking skill, while everything else can safely be used whenever it’s available. Saving Reassembled for when Drill is available, or for your third combo attack at lower levels, is one of the only optimizations that you need to do with Machinist. It isn’t too hard to learn the spam that comes with Overheat, but overlapping animations can sometimes make it difficult to use it efficiently. Otherwise, a great learning experience class.
Levelling: Machinist is probably the highest damage AOE for every dungeon from level 15-60. It’s single target in those ranges is also very high. This coupled with skipping the worst levels, always having AOE in roulettes, and peloton leaves Machinist as the easiest and most powerful levelling class in the entire game, without question. I am never, ever upset to see a machinist in any 1-60 dungeon. Having one instantly speeds up every type of pull, and takes pressure off of everyone because their levelling power is so high off the curve of every other class. Because of this, if you have any interest at all in the class, it’s amazing to just jump into. You have most of your important skills within 5 levels of starting the class, and from there it’s mostly little things to add some flair to the simple rotations. A great class for anyone who has any interest in a laid back mob shooting gallery, and I can assure you your contributions will be appreciated.
Conclusion: Machinist is an easy sell, honestly. You jump in at level 30, and are powerful from level 30-60. If you have any interest in this gunslinger, don’t be intimidated from picking it up. It’s easy and fun to level, and despite it’s shortcomings in depth and complexity, it can still be fun to just unwind after a stressful day or even other stressful classes. The cherry on top is that if you want to experience more of Ishgard’s story, you’ll find an exemplar of it here. Become a gunslinger today!
