For those who haven't played Rift, here's how it works:
Within the wardrobe menu there's a searchable appearance database of every possible appearance in the game.
Every time you pick up a piece of gear for which you hadn't had the appearance, you immediately unlock it, account-wide. There's no need to equip it, select "unlock appearance", or even be able to equip it on your current class/job. The game also denotes on items you haven't unlocked the appearance for in their description.
The wardrobe section has a slot for every equipment slot. If there's nothing there, it defaults to the appearance of what you're wearing. One of the options is to display nothing.
There are dye channels. While not all dyes are immediately available, they are permanently unlocked when you do unlock one. The starting selection is pretty varied too.
Changing a slot's appearance is literally as simple as going into the wardrobe, selecting that slot, and clicking on a different appearance. There are no transmutation charges, no prisms, no fees. Changing the dye is the same way. Click, click, done.
You can save multiple appearances and swap between them instantly, although unlocking more saved appearance slots costs money.
It's incredibly straightforward, faster, and less limiting than any other MMO's glamour system. As far as I'm concerned it's the gold standard for how a glamour system should work.
