Results Of Scion Ranking Questionnaire

A little over a month ago, I asked folks to rank the Scions accordingly to what they thought.

Thusly, I now share the results from 67 participants along with a few select personal reason responses per Scion (sans spoilers, of course).

We'll go in order of least favourite to most. Rankings were calculated with a #1 vote having a weight of 10, moving down to a #10 vote having a weight of 1.

And without further ado...

#10 - Papalymo (257 points)

Took on responsibility and burdens that we never really knew without bringing attention to them. A deeper character then expected.

-

Never really got a chance to learn much about him.

-

Papalymo was great, but his whole time he was defined purely through his relationship with Yda. He was the responsible one, keeping Yda in check with varying degrees of success. So he didn't feel that independent as a character.

-

Arrogant, stuck up.

#9 - Moenbryda (260 points)

Her appearance was too brief to really get a feel on her character, but her flirtatious relationship with Urianger was a nice bit of levity. To no fault of her own, I wish we could have known her more.

-

Her ranking is not because I didn't like her. She was HW-onward Alisaie in axe-wielding Roegadyn form, with an interesting history between her, Urianger and Louisoux. I just wish we had more time with her, more moments between her and Urianger, hell, I'd've loved to see her and Alisaie tearing through Imperials and sin eaters with wild abandon. We can but dream of what could have been.

-

she came and then she left shrug

-

Cool character when she was around but she wasn't around for long

#8 - Minfilia (289 points)

Felt like a very 2D character. Never got to know her personally it felt like.

-

Lack of direct impact on the story before becoming, essentially, a totally different character. Not a bad character by any means.

-

people over exagerates what they hate of her, yes, we do not see what she did for the scions on arr, but thats more on how badly they showed what she can do for the scions, then there is also the whole thing she can't fight complain many people had, she was never a fighter, nobody trained her on the arts of war, yet even tho she can't fight, she show a lot of bravery during the story, trying to stand up to injustices, even if she does not have the strenght to prevent them

-

PRAY RETURN TO THE WAKING SANDS, nuff said

#7 - Yda (306 points)

The ditz act really didn't land and Stormblood made it so much worse.

-

Yda's character is an interesting one. I enjoyed her double act with Papalymo, and I liked the focus we got on her in Stormblood. That said, one of the bad points of Stormblood for me was her character arc. She just didn't feel like she was ready to lead yet. I still like her personality and the bond we have, just not how quickly she ended up where she did.

-

I mean shes not hated or disliked, its just most other scions were just better than being a bland punchy girl

-

She lacks conviction and sense of self for so long, and by the time she has it, she's more or less temporarily written out.

#6 - Tataru (391 points)

Annoying, but tries her best.

-

The ever unsung hero of the Scions. Ever working behind the scenes, Tataru always has the Scions' best interest at heart, and makes sure the Rising Stones functions like a well oiled machine.

-

Quirky, went through a nice lil character arc showing she's capable of more things. Obviously hiding a mischievious side, maybe she truly is a well-trained spy for the Scions.

-

She tries so hard to support the wol shes lower than I would otherwise put bc of her horrid fashion sense for wol tho

#5 - Urianger (401 points)

Urianger was a character who, while HW made me like him a little more, Shadowbringers was where he really came into his own. Before, he stood out as the guy who spoke Shakespearean and our only reason to keep returning to the Waking Sands, yet he never felt like a major character until briefly in HW, then back to the background. Shadowbringers gave him some much needed focus, showing man who'll move heaven and earth to aid his friends, even if they'll hate him for it.

-

he keeps to many secrets to me liking

-

Dorky handsome Elezen who's on top of things, and willing to do things that move the story forward. He isn't above failing or being wrong, but he quickly adjusts. He never once needed to be bailed out, because he's always three steps ahead: he feels like the only character who's on par with the player about what is going on in the story, and for well justified reasons. He can't not be the best.

-

Shakespeare requests his dictionary back, at least he made me think about what I was reading.

#4 - Thancred (434 points)

Broody moody man, gives me the same feelings like Papalymo though ShB seems to be changing it. Tolerable to have around but not my biggest favorite sadly.

-

Broody, but you get to deal with him a lot throughout the stort and get a good sense of who he is.

-

Had we stopped at SB, he'd be at Y'shtola's spot. ShB gave him developement that made him more than a womanizer spy, and he is one of the most flawed yet good and human characters in the game. He deserves far more credit for this.

-

He's like your cool uncle showing you things your parents thought too dangerous

#3 - Y'shtola (441 points)

i like her but she's overrated and not a very interesting character

-

bottom of the core shadowbringers roadtrip scions for me but that's just because the cast is so strong not because i dislike her.

-

Ah, the face of FFXIV. Y'shtola's by far the most mature member of the Scions, she can always be counted on to point us in the right direction, or deal with nuisances that hamper our missions. That said, I feel like she's seemed a little out of focus, compared to others, always there, yet never having a major character arc. Then again, not necessarily a bad thing, since she acts as a stabilizing force among the more extreme personalities.

-

Y'shtola is decisive, blunt when she needs to be without being cruel (let's be honest, "Little Sun" had it coming), and strong. Shadowbringers shows a lot more of her intellectual side, too. She's a multifaceted, strong, independent character who's not too aloof to care.

#2 - Alphinaud (443 points)

Jerk at first, but he really improved a lot from HW to ShB.

-

His character development from Heavensward onward was excellent, especially how we went from his "personal WoL" to one of our closest friends. That moment when we got to play as him was memorable, and I'm curious to see where his story will go next.

-

alphinaud is ranked lower alongside his twin simply for one fact: they were insufferable in ARR and i'm full glad that changed through the expansions. They're not my favorite but they're starting to grow on me, especially in ShB.

-

Best scion in HW, he's been with us for the most time and still is an incredibly strong character thanks to the massive amount of well written growth he got over the course of the game. Why couldn't we put multiple people at #1?

#1 - Alisaie (463 points)

I like her, I do wish she would tone down her aggressiveness, considering she's in a organisation that strives for peace.

-

When playing through Coil, I didn't quite connect with Alisaie at first. Then Heavensward brought her back and now I can't imagine the Scions without her. With her determination to do the right thing and her willingness, dare I say eagerness, to throw herself into the fray at our side, Alisaie is someone I'd always trust to have my back.

-

Wasn't a big fan at first, but she grew on me really quickly with her intense desire to help everyone she comes across. Also a cynic, she does take things a step further and challenges what she disagrees with, a trait she shares well with her brother.

-

Steals LB.

Cheers, and I hope all of you who participated enjoy reading the results.
