I’m part way into Heavensward on the PS4, and I’ve learned a few things so far. Here’s a list.
-There is an ocean of depth in this game, and trying to learn it all feels like trying to drink an ocean. That feeling wears off about…uh…I’ll get back to you on that.
-Though the game is an ocean, some quests are pebbles skipped across the surface. Which is a poetic way of saying they are boring as hell.
-XIV has one of the best stories in gaming but the writing varies on individual quest lines, which range from good to skip skip skip. Urianger’s talking? SKIP.
-Anybody else notice how much the writers (or translators, more likely) are in love with the word “Succor”? I’ve heard it more in the past month than in the 40 years before that.
-Eorzea? Ala Mhigo? Midgarsomr? Raubahn? Lalafell? Someone just randomly jammed their keyboard for these names. Here’s a new character, Awrogjkg.
-The MSQ after defeating Ultima Weapon and before Heavensward is pure, mind-numbing pain. But you get to watch a good episode of Game of Thrones at the end.
-Playing SAM may make me a weeb, but this is a weeb game, so why not be the king of weebs?
-Melee DPS and Healer play so differently they are almost different games. Somehow I suck at both.
-When I started playing, I thought the gameplay was too slow. Getting close to 60 now, with all these OGCDs and positionals and more on the way, I recant that opinion.
-Don’t stand in AOE telegraphs, but you can stand in AOE animations. Most of the time.
-Keep an eye on AOEs. And an eye on your rotation. And cool downs. And your party’s health. And buffs and debuffs. And enemies. And unique mechanics. To play optimally, have 7 sets of eyes.
-Playing on PS4 with a controller is a special handicap mode where it’s too much hassle to chat and targeting is twice as hard.
-Just fall over dead for no reason during a dungeon? Surprise, there’s a mechanic you didn’t know about!
-Macroing Summon Mount/Sprint to your right thumb stick click and getting a comfortable cross hotbar set up significantly improve quality of life on controller.
-Is that my boy, Sam Riegel, voicing a character? It is! And Thancred’s voice sounds just like Percival Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo the Third. Yes, that’s Taliesin Jaffe! The Critical Role is strong with this game.
-Your class hunting log and your GC hunting log are DIFFERENT. I just got that one. I feel stupid for not progressing in my GC because of that misunderstanding.
-I leveled up my miner class to 60, but I’m still not sure why. I get treasure maps sometimes?
-The more I like this game, the less my wife and kids like it. (No, you can’t watch TV, I’m in the middle of a dungeon. Come back in an hour.)
