I posted about a month ago a few of my thoughts as a new player. Here are some more thoughts, as I think two people requested.
-The story of Heavensward was great. I spent a lot of time trying to summarize to my wife why I’m fighting the elf super pope on DS9, and the Dragonsong War has become part of my son’s bedtime story rotation.
-Now that I’ve finished Stormblood, I find it to be one of the most engaging and mature explorations of rebellion and revolution I’ve seen in a fantasy setting. I’m hard-pressed to think of another story of this kind that has dealt with the complicated issues of resettling refugees, prisoner exchanges, and the ethics of revenge on collaborators.
-The Singularity Reactor is the best thing ever. I laughed out loud when I realized what I was seeing.
-The quicktime events introduced in Stormblood are a little cheesy, but they allow for amazing set pieces in primal fights. Parrying Susano’s giant blade was one of the coolest things I’ve done in this game.
-Now that I’m close to 80, my Double-Hot-Cross-Bun-Bars are getting awfully crowded. How do you veteran controller players do it?
-I realized I have more fun when I look up details for a dungeon/trial while I queue for it. At first I thought this was dumb (like, why am I doing research for my game?), but the results don’t lie. Letting the team wipe because I wanted to go in fresh on a dungeon doesn’t make the experience better.
-My wife’s present to me for Father’s Day this year was to be able to play FFXIV for 7 hours uninterrupted. My wife gets me.
-Despite some hesitation earlier, I’ve made the switch from DPS to tank (GNB) and I’ve never been happier. I set up a message for when I entered DF dungeons to tell people I was new to tanking, and I got a lot of supportive responses. No one was pushy about me going slowly. I recently stopped sending the message because I’m feeling more comfortable with the job. Still don’t do wall to wall pulls, but I’ll get there.
-I joked with a friend that FFXIV is like playing an MMO and watching 8 seasons of a TV show at the same time. Now I understand that this isn’t a joke, this really is the game. In ARR, I felt all of the “Walk and Talk” quests were getting in the way of the gameplay, but these storytelling moments are the gameplay. Not the best gameplay FFXIV has to offer, but important nonetheless.
-It is absolutely astounding how much STUFF there is in this game. I’ve played over 300 hours and I still feel like I’m just scratching the surface. I’ve got mounts and minions and gear to collect, side quests to do, a house to buy, Raids (which I haven’t even touched yet), whatever Eureka is, Dark Dungeons, leveling all these other classes, the list goes on and on.
-I’ve only just started Shadowbringer, but Captain Lyna is best girl.
