So I went into FFXIV with the notion that “ARR boring, Heavensward amazing, Stormblood worst thing ever, Shadowbringers masterpiece” because I saw people parrot it a lot...
ARR was truly a teriffic slog in the beginning but after the Titan fight it was quite nice, post ARR was something I enjoyed though because the story read like a ticking bomb. Although the dungeons and the trials were rather easy and didn’t require much thought, but I didn’t care much because it was just an introduction to the game. Also found out how nice in game people really are and I really liked the zones. Also music is great.
HW has one of my favourite concepts (medieval setting and dragons) but... I found myself struggling getting through it. It has a lot of deus ex machina and plot devices happening after each other and the one time it doesn’t happen is for the sake of emotional moments (which were well done, really, but they felt weird given how they kept pulling all these plot conveniences ...), the story also felt cut short at some parts, overall it was a little bit odd... many characters also didn’t feel very utilized, but it had some really nicely designed dungeons and cool bosses (also loved the raid), though most of them including the solo instances had the “lets just get it through” mechanics. One of the biggest turn offs were the maps as well, they were enormous and took forever to get through. Ishgard is also very beautiful with cool music but the zones themselves were grim and I didn’t like them at all. Also post HW stuff was a bit more difficult than ARR at times...
Stormblood... was really when I started enjoying the game fully. Level 60 is when most classes start getting good so there’s that too. But god the solo instances, trials, raids and the dungeons were really fun and memorable, it also introduced some new things and I enjoyed it a lot. The story was also consistent without any of the “fake epic moments”, it had its flaws but somehow it finally felt like we were our own character and it broke the monotonous feel of “the ever winning warrior”. I really didn’t expect to like it so much but here I am. Most of class quests were also enjoyable (HW ones were a bit difficult to pay attention to) and the post Stormblood content was really cool too.
ShB just utilized on all the content which was improved in SB and brought it to its fuller potential. The base story was amazing and it had the epic moments of HW and consistent story of Sb. Memorable trials, dungeons and raids too with great music. Although the patches could have some stuff in story done better (different writer perhaps?) but the base game was just really cool. I like how they gave so much depth to the certain villains. The maps felt just right too.
Although I do miss going into buildings in the zones lol
Tl;dr dont be like me riding on the hype train and letting others tell you what to enjoy because chances are you will be disappointed because your taste is different and you experience things differently
