I just logged into my account after finally getting my stimulus to find that whatever random person the automated system chose to lead my FC (It skipped my entire 2nd in command rank, despite my roommate's account being a contender because he'd logged in after my last login), and they sold it on Reddit on May 18th (2 days ago) for the large plot.
I received NO EMAILS regarding the potential loss of my FC, and I'd assumed if I did lose it, it would go to one of my trusted 2nd ranks. Instead it skipped them entirely. Supposedly it goes to the next highest rank who's logged in within 45 days, but no one in my 2nd rank would have done this, which means it went to a random person in a low rank simply because they'd logged in more recently than my 2nd ranking officers. (Admittedly most of them are inactive lately, but my roommate was active within the last 45 days and thus shouldn't have been considered an inactive user. Neither of us could even get the recent free login bonus.)
Apparently my FC + house was put for sale on an FFXIV housing subreddit by whoever it was who got leadership (I invite low rank randoms because I had a LOT of resources and liked to share). I lost 4 airships, 4 submarines, over 700 housing items (store room was near full and housing items were full at 400, plus outside items), several million gil in my FC chest, all the FC items, MILLIONS in shards and crystals and clusters, and Square Enix's scripted response is just too bad so sad, guess you should've paid your sub.
Square Enix needed to extend their demotion of FC leaders since they already acknowledged that housing demolition should be postponed, but people ARE losing their houses still because of this oversight. It's even easier to sell an FC than it is to sell a house now, and they won't repay you in any way, not even a consolation prize for losing years of your life and millions of gil in items.
It's upsetting enough to lose an FC to auto demotion, but during a global pandemic? You'd think they would have an ounce of sympathy and extend that along with the housing, considering the current unemployment rates. If they had even extended it by one week, I wouldn't have lost my FC. And judging by their notice about FC ranks on the launcher, I'm not the first person to have a similar problem recently and if they don't do something about it, I won't be the last.
Tl;dr: Square's auto-demote function of FC leaders after only 35 days is unreasonable in an ongoing global pandemic when housing demolition has been extended and not even GMs are expected to log in.
