So lately I've seen a ton of people here talking about how much they wish they had friends to play with in-game.
Oftentimes that's a reference to RL friends, but that's not really something that can be helped over the internet. Especially not now, with lots of places on lockdown. But I can give some ideas for making friends within the game.
Give some of these a try:
The most obvious answer. If you aren't in an FC yet, or if your FC isn't as social or talkative as you'd like, then maybe it's time for a fresh search. It's kind of hard to search for FCs ingame, but you can take a look at the Recruitment subreddits or om the Lodestone. It doesn't hurt to try out an FC for a bit to see if they're really what you're looking for, and tbh the best way to know whether you'll like an FC is to be in it. Anyone can say they help newbies and run 24/7 buffs, but do they really?
Dungeons, trials, raids, etc. If you run content with some folks who turn out to be pretty cool or helpful, why not send them a friend request? You can't send friend requests during the duty iirc, but you can reach out afterwards. Under your Social menu, in Contacts, there's a list of the players you've run content with recently. From there, you can select their name and send a friend request.
Note that this can be buggy sometimes. If the player is on a different World than you, or if they went straight into a cutscene, you might get an error message stating that "there is no character with that name" or something like that. In that case, just try again after a minute or two until the request goes through.
Nobody is obligated to accept your friend request, but if you were likable enough, it's highly likely that they will.
As a bonus, if someone was pretty helpful, and they're on the same World as you, maybe you should look into joining their FC, as the people they surround themselves with probably approach the game just like they do.
This is actually a kinda new feature, and (imo) a little low-powered. But it's a great gateway into communities where you might find folks with similar hobbies and interests, game-wise or otherwise. It shows you 100 results by default, but you can also run searches as well. Many of these fellowships will have Discord servers, where you can really chat with folks.
You can find the Fellowship Finder under the Social menu ingame as well.
This very subreddit has its own Discord server (link's in the sidebar), and you can also search for related communities via Discord's built-in search (at the bottom of the left sidebar in the app). Also, many Discord servers have links to other Discord servers, and so on and so forth. Show up to events, run content with the community, and generally treat people well, and you should come away with an abundance of friends to play with.
Some caveats: Making friends, or even acquaintances, always requires legwork and effort. I can't tell you specifically where to look because I don't know what your interests are. And even if I did know, I probably don't know how to find those communities. I can't tell you where to find the She-Ra cosplayers or the Animal Crossing fanatics on your DC. You'll have to look for that yourself, starting with any of the four points listed above.
As well, you'll want to at least try to keep in touch with folks. Be active in the Discord servers, say hello via /tell, etc. If you're that guy who only reaches out when you need a tank to jump the DPS queue, that can be annoying to some people.
Happy to add any other ideas or experiences y'all have for making friends. Now go forth and socialize.
