After sleeping on it, I’ve come to realise the error in my previous analysis, and I want to thank the Job designers for their adjustments made to Viper. Thanks to the NG removal, Viper has been made into a more accessible job.
But I implore the Job Designers not to stop here, the hard work is truly only beginning. With that in mind, I wanted to constructively suggest more adjustments that would continue to make Viper more fun for everyone.
1. While removing NG has decreased the stress of debuff uptime on VPR, we still unfortunately have two personal buffs that need to be maintained all of the time. We could make these baseline to the job, with potency increases and a trait similar to Monk’s greased lightning. The end result would effectively be the same, in terms of the buttons the player presses and damage output, so this would be a positive change.
2. After careful studying of the tooltips, I’ve noticed that Steel Fangs and Reaving Fangs actually do the same thing, just buffing the opposite skill. Would it not be easier to use the exciting new Action Change Setting to automatically alter the same keybind to Steel Fangs or Reaving Fangs automatically based on the buff the player currently has? That would help players struggling to hit the correct combo starter.
3. Based on suggestion number one, there would be no need to have separate keybinds for the Vicewinder follow up Weaponskills (since we reduced the cognitive burden on players to choose which buff to reapply first), so we could again use the Action Change Settings to automatically change our Vicewinder keybind into the follow up skills, reducing the rotational complexity.
4. Reawaken’s weaponskills could also be a single keybind under the Action Change settings, given that we always want to press the weaponskills in the same order.
I think these would go a long way towards making Viper a more welcoming job for all players in the FFXIV community.
