Planning To Try Ff14 Out. Have Some Questions.

I have heard some good things about this game and I decided that I want to try it out. But I do have some questions about it.

1. Should I just buy the starter edition that's on Steam? Is there any drawbacks on not buying the latest expansion right away?
2. I play Unholy DK in WoW. What's the most similar class (or jobs as I think they are called in this game, correct?) in FF14?
