Pirates of the Burning Sea

Ashmus

Unicorns are kickass!
This just went into public beta for all who are interested. Go to their website and follow the links and stuff.

I downloaded about half of it in 3 hours, will probably have the rest of it tonight...

And may have time to play it Monday@.@

my download finished in like 4 hours I guess. Installed after and updated just now. Haven't hit play yet. Guess they're stress testing one of the 3 servers they have going. I'll probably have time to hit play tomorrow.

I cued up the game for 30 minutes before I hit work. Interesting Character Creation. Not enough faces to choose from but lots of other details. So many I kept getting disconnected from the login server while trying to dress up my pirate. I think that's pretty funny they give you the whole pirate version of barbie's lets play dress up center, then dc you before you've finished playing with half the options.

I haven't read up about the game on any forums yet but from characters creation you seem to have 4 factions and 4 jobs. Pirate faction can be pirate job, and that's about it. British, Spanish, & French can be Naval Officer, Privateer, or Freetrader.

Got 3 servers up. Blackbeard and Rakham US, and Black Bart or something for EU.

I had to go to work before I could finish making myself a pretty pirate with just the right hat and coat but when I get around to playing queer eye for the pirate guy again I'll probably hit the Blackbeard server and make a Pirate and a Brit to see the differences.

You should.

I logged on this morning and made a British Naval Officer. I gather they end up as tanks or something. Played the tutorial and it was interesting. Got in a few sword and ship fights. Got a mission to go sack some pirate keep but didnt' have time to do it. Messed around in the first British town a few though. Lotta variety in the character creation. You can make everything from a disheveled deckhand, a Jack Sparrow clone, or pimp out a merchant to look like Louie XIVth or something.

Saw some pretty cool avatars other folks made, and a couple silly ones running around in flourescent green hair and boots that looked like they were made from authentic smurf. Although the later did make me consider making a Spanish Privateer named Zorro the Gay Blade and pimping him out like that old novelty Zorro flick. Koul may download and beat me to it now that I've mentioned it though.

I heard in the general channel the open beta ended Dec 31st, and if that's right you should get to downloading. General Channels are often full of shit though.

You get a ship right off, and you can rename it. You can probably pull off The Tropicana, and with the clothing options I bet you could even recreate your sig:icecream:

Yeah, open beta ends the 1st I guess, they're having some final beta events going on I think this weekend, all of which I'll likely miss.

From goofing off with it I'd say it's pretty fun, but gets rather repetetive. Maybe they'll have more zone maps available for the swashbuckling missions on release, but for beta it's like the same 3 over and over again.

It's set up like WoW with 4 factions that can't seem to talk to each other, though I think you may be able to learn the other languages. You can have big battles over conquering ports though and nations can compete to conquer the carribean, which may be interesting. Didn't have time to get into nation battles. Muddled around and upgraded my ship to larger models 3 times though, and it is rather amusing trying to maneuver at sea, playing with the wind, in order to get in position to give another ship a broadside.

I got up to a 12 gun corvette and I really dug the 'boom' I got from it. Leveling up to a 100 gun frigate just for the bigger boom factor is an appealing idea. I guess you can get into building plantations and such and becoming a rum or rice trader as well, but I only put a few hours into the game.

The PvP might actually be interesiting as it seems more skill and timing based than anything else out there. I mean even a level 10 guy in a shoddy 6 gun rinky dink sloop could sail by a level 50 in a frigate and pop a few rounds into the guys riggings fucking up his speed and maneuvering in a fleet battle. Everyone could contribute.

Don't think I'd pay monthly for it, but maybe would be amusing to pop a few broadsides into the Spanish or French once or twice a week.
