My name is Titan Men, and before you dismiss me as a troll, I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIV since January 2020 so I'm a well seasoned veteran and you should listen to me. I'm not the type of player to complain much and I always take into account the multitudes of cultural differences between Japan and USA owing to my sophisticated understanding of anime (Japanese cartoons for those who don't know Japanese). So this post is not due to a lack of cultural understanding.
I have recently noticed that there are many NPCs who smoke openly in the streets. Now this wouldn't normally be an issue but I ran into a quest that I refuse to complete called A Lesson in Listening (https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/A_Lesson_in_Listening). For those unaware, you need to craft a pipe box for people to use to smoke. ("While they praise the food and drink, they feel the shop wants for ways for them to pass the time, one popular suggestion being a place to enjoy their pipe. Now enlightened as to what the customers are looking for, you may return to the Shiokaze Hostelry and discuss with Cemi what you can make for Ume.") We all know that pipe is a euphemism for the devil's lettuce and while I am one to usually live and let live, forcing me to make a choice between sin and the inability to complete my main job quest is a bit too far.
The storyline and the crafting design are actually really cool. But it's very unfortunate that I have to make a moral compromise to progress in the game. My reaction when I found out that I have to craft a pipe box was to immediately think of my grandfather's lung cancer. I couldn't enjoy the quest because I was too busy thinking, "LUNG CANCER" over and over. Beyond the negative morals of the quest, it also reminded me of the millions of people who die to lung cancer due to smoking, and this is not what I play the game for.
What's worse is that some immature players don't seem to care too much about the quest, in fact they thought it was enjoyable. I know the pipe box is just fictitious pixels, but it could still persuade people to smoke. Seeing as many users have recently been warned not to make illegal modding content in the game, it's pretty darn obvious that people will take the quest as an endorsement of smoking, which I am sure is not what the devs intended.
An easy fix would be to change the requirement from crafting a pipe box to a tea box since it is a teahouse after all. It might be slightly incongruent with what the teahouse quest is but that's a small price to pay to not endorse smoking.
My deepest thanks for your time and I hope this open letter is well-received.
