A close friend of mine died while playing FFXIV. He was an early MMO developer, had his hand in many RP communities, but to me, he was just that guy I played Gloomhaven with in person every weekend. Last week I got a call from his roommate, also a friend, that she found him dead in front of his computer.
We had no idea how involved he was in his online communities, but in the following days, we worked to secure all of his online accounts and went through his discord to close out his online life. We discovered he was a guild leader of a big in game FFXIV community - all of whom were shocked by his passing. They determined to make an in person memorial event, and I joined their discord.
I hadn't played an MMO since Guild Wars 1 years ago and had long since given up on the genere. But someone made a guide for new players to join with trial accounts and see the memorial service and... I was moved to tears.
They set up a guest book and had probably above 100 people at their guild house. They had speakers stand on a bridge and yell long messages OOC of their experiences with this wonderful human being. They were kind enough to have people ferrying new players who were just in to see the service out to the guild house. I was in tears. I paid my respects to him in his house room. I later found out 6 GMs showed up in the middle of the event and saluted him.
I've since stuck with them. I made a full account that night after the memorial. I've interacted with many people in his free company. I had a friend join this morning. I'm learning to love MMOs again. Everyone seems so much nicer in this MMO than others I've played. Final Fantasy was my favorite game growing up, so the extra Final Fantasy element and the music and the beautiful scenery has really got me catching the bug again.
I just wanted to thank y'all for having such a wonderful playerbase and truly giving this player the send off he deserved.
