I don't think they've said if it would be a FF or not yet, just that SE is making one. Personally if it's not an FF I probably won't play it unless they magically become amazing MMO designers when not tied to the PS2.

Finally, another FFXIII trailer! It's only taken them a year. -_-;;

I'm really looking forward to that game. Versus I'm not so sure about, but the other one amazed me from when I saw the first trailer. I was never all that excited about FFXII before its release (though I really enjoyed the game after I got it), but I'm anxiously awaiting this one.

Come on, SE, you know you want to release it in 2008!

Wow that looks awesome! I hadn't paid much attention to FF13 after really not enjoying FF12. But already just from the trailers it looks like it'll have much more interesting characters with personality (unlike 12 imo. Vaan was the most bland thing in existence).

Damn, Lightning (at least according to wikipedia that's her name) is my heroine.

Aqua, Lightningちゃんと結婚したい!格好すぎる~! (ルアナちゃんと終わりlol)

World of Dragonquest! :tounge-3:

(unlike 12 imo. Vaan was the most bland thing in existence).

Every protagonist in FFs have the same problem: void on all aspects of personality, emotion, etc. But somewhere around the second act, they find love and save the world. It's ridiculous. The backup characters always have more personality. Auron, Vivi, Balthier, Locke, and on an on.

Cloud was a pretty good protagonist imo....even tho he borrowed his personality from zack...and had no idea wtf was going on for 2/3 of the game :p

I'm not sure I entirely agree. Case in point, FF8. I hated the characters honestly. Squall was an asshole and Rinoa a creepy stalker. BUT assholery does count as a form of personality, otherwise Sojourn would have none.

Tidus wasn't too bad either. He was a bit bland, but he had that whole childhood thing hating his dad and all angsty and such.

Vaan is just, "I'm here." I think there was something about him wanting to be a sky pirate, but I forget due to lack impact. And what made it the worst imo, is that the secondary characters were pretty bland too. Like you said, they always had strong supporting characters. Balthier was the ONLY character in 12 with any personality. Granted it was cut cliche of "I'm a smarmy pirate," but it still existed. Penelo? Vanilla. Ashe? Whatever. The benny girl, Fran was it? Hot, but vapid. Had to wikipedia to remember her name. And Wiki showed me Basch. I didn't even remember he existed.

I think the bigger problem there was the basis was NOT on the characters, but on the world struggle. Like Dune without Muadib. I suppose it had a good plot; I can't say as I never beat it. But without engaging characters it's like a game of risk embedded in CSs across 100 hours of gameplay.

I thought Ashe was kind of interesting, because she was low-key but you could see she was struggling with some issues. I completely agree about Vann, Basch, etc though. I felt a little for Fran later on, but overall she didn't make a huge impact. You're right, overall it was more about the world struggle and not as character driven. I'm glad I finished it, but it certainly had bland-character issues.

In contrast, I'd like to mention FFX. I know many feel differently, but I loved the story and thought that Tidus and Yuna were really good characters. I felt tremendously for them as they stepped toward their ultimate destiny (well, not-so-ultimate since Yuna's got a role in FFX-2 ^_~ ). Sure you don't start out knowing them well; they start out kinda bland. But you really see them struggle along the way and react based on who they are. That game had the saddest, most touching ending of any game I can think of, and it would not have worked without the buildup of their characters throughout the game.
