I love that they have brought crafting back into the relic process. It's been too long since relics truly felt like something earned by being top-tier at all of the the more casual aspects of the game. The first step introduced with patch 7.31 very much feels like an old-school ARR relic step, which is amazing.
However, I was a bit disappointed that this amazing momentum did not carry over to repeated relics. I would gladly do more crafts, spend gil, do fates, or re-grind the light stage for subsequent relics!
I understand wanting to provide flexibility by using tomes, but for me, it is more motivating to be told "to progress this relic you must complete tam-tara deepcroft hard" vs "just do whatever". I know it is more efficient to assign roulettes and meet demand as well.
My ideal compromise here is something like my favorite system in game, Wondrous Tails, where you're given duties or categories of duty to complete. In other words, ARR books :3 (with more engaging duties instead of leves)
