not tremendously practical if you're used to the standard methods. pretty cool regardless though
 
That... is... awesome... I wonder if you showed that as how you got your answer the teacher would mark your grade down >.<
 
Looks like the normal method to me. if you cross 3 vertical lines and 4 horizontal lines, you get 3x4 = 12 intersections.
 
I would put this closer to the realm of parlor trick rather than useful tool. Traditional multiplication techniques would be more efficient when dealing with larger numbers and more place values. Notice that they don't even try any multiplication greater than 3x3. It would become cumbersome to count all the intersections for anything too much larger.

I will say that this would be useful if you don't know your multiplication tables.
