For gender-exclusive cosmetics in the Mog Station, the descriptions list them as "Designed for" a specific gender.
"* This item is designed for female characters." almost sounds like a suggestion, the way the randomly generated names at character creation are designed for the race/gender you are creating but are not a requirement.
Clearly Alma's dress is designed for female characters, a basic knowledge of common gender stereotypes would imply as much, but nowhere on the product page's description does it say a male character cannot equip it.
You would need to read through the individual Lodestone item tooltip, be familiar with how this game treats genders, or interpret "designed" as this description intended in order to make the correct assumption about how this item does/doesn't work.
This bullet point in the Mog Station should be clear about items' limitations (because it can be). Examples:
(Also, the gender-exclusive warning isn't listed on the shopping cart page with the other warnings once an item's been added to cart; only seems to show on its product page.)
I understand these alternatives aren't as soft or marketable as a phrase like "designed for" but the reality is: neither is the practice of making gender exclusive items. Until the devs stop creating gear with arbitrary gender restrictions, can web/store/localization team please help by being more clear about these in-game limitations in the product descriptions?
Sorry for the salt - it's just every time I go to Try On an item and it gives me an error message instead it fuels my rage and the cruel optimism of "designed" does nothing to help... plus the writer in me just knows this can be better.
