I know this entire game is basically a mashup of re-purposed characters from series' history, but one moment the other day hit me pretty hard.
From the first time Matoya was mentioned in HW, I couldn't wait to see how she was represented. I was 8 years old when FF was released on NES, and it was my first real experience anticipating a game release. I had been obsessing over the Nintendo Power previews of the game for at least a few months at that point.
Unlike a lot of the other characters and enemies, which have appeared in different forms over and over, Matoya seemed lost to time, other than the use of the name on a couple of objects in other games. Bringing her into FFXIV would be jumping directly from 8-bit to today with no incremental changes along the way.
And it was so well done! The giant purple hat! The self-cleaning brooms that talk backwords! Matoya's goddamn cave in 3D with real scale to it!
Making her one of Louisoux's contemporaries was a nice touch.
It's just so cool when designers have decades of lore and nostalgia to pull from and they do it respectfully and effectively.
