Matoya's Cave Fanservice / Appreciation

So, I didn't know where else to share this and figured someone might appreciate. Anybody else been playing Final Fantasy since the beginning?

I just started playing FFXIV late last year. Today, I arrived at Matoya's Cave in Heavensward. The moment put me to tears of nostalgia.

I received the original Final Fantasy for NES for my 9th birthday. My parents only got it because my new subscription to Nintendo Power came with a strategy guide for this game and they wanted me to practice reading the strategy guide while I played the game.

For those who haven't played FF1, Matoya's Cave is the first stop after the cold open, just as the game gets going. The backwards talking bats, the brooms, the music, the enigmatic Matoya and her herbs (this is how I learned the word Herb). I remember realizing in her cave that this game was going to be... Different. Special.

The attention to detail in recreating this character and cave in Final Fantasy XIV was beautiful. All those elements are there -- the melody, the herbs, the brooms, her appearance. It's the same kind of nostalgia I got playing FF7 remake (familiar yet new), but the memories are much older and deeper. I'm sitting here realizing 30 years have passed since I first started playing Final Fantasy, and I've played every entry since. I'm a little late to this game, so to speak.

Major appreciation to the developers for this moment. It means a lot to this old man. Had to share with you guys and gals because, well, no one in Facebook understands :)
