I don't know if this would work, but I thought of maybe the idea of having the Goblin Mutamix Bubblypots in Central Thanalan near Black Brush Station, learning a new skill where he takes unwanted Materia and crushes them down into dust. Depending on the Materia if it's a 1 doesn't give much dust and a 8 giving you a bit more. Then you can use that dust to get whatever Materia ya need but so it's not overpowered you can leave the current expansions Materia out of it, til the .55 patch. And I someone else can think of how much dust it would be for a Materia I all the way up to say Materia VI that way the trading 5 to him is maybe a better chance at getting the Materia you want vs the Cruncher, just to have more options open for older Materia.
