*I thought it was time we had a topic dedicated to crafter and gatherer stories. Many people might not find the world of crafting and gathering to be all that interesting, but from what I've found it can be a cut-throat endeavor, where it is seller against the seller in an attempt to capitalize on the Market Board and make money.*
My recent story, or what I like to call, "The Saga of Planters."
My friend told me housing items sell really well, so I thought, well I will throw some Wall Planters and Planter Partitions on the MB and see how they do. I had just made tons for my house and had leftovers, they cost me nothing to make so cool.
I noticed there were the same two retainers with about 4 listings each on the MB, whatever, I threw up five of my own at a 200 gil undercut and waited to see. What would ensue over the next two days was a vicious cycle of another seller and the 1 gil undercut. This would occur frequently throughout the day, allowing only this person's four listings to sell, and if you undercut him he would throw up four more with a 1 gil difference. I am not sure why certain sellers feel they own certain items on the MB and should be the only one who gets to sell, but whatever, I can roll with the punches. As the frequency of this ramped up, my inner-villain began to take hold of my crafting and gathering soul.
If this other seller wanted to consistently MB-block me, I would craft over 100 of each item and completely crash the MB in pricing for both Wall Planters and Planter Partitions to oblivion. However, before I did such a thing I figured...lets see if I can call a truce.
Did a shout in Limsa, giving a fair warning. Let's stop these antics. He definitely heard me, the listings multiplied and the aggressiveness of 1-2 gil undercutting ramped up by 100. Therefore, I crashed the MB, reducing the pricing from 25k to 3k.
Again, remind you, I am losing nothing and this has now become a person vendetta of my own and one I am now cackling maniacally like Maleficent screaming "I am the mistress of all evil!"
My plan didn't work, however, as they just continued to undercut. Therefore, I changed my tactics. I plunge the pricing, they follow suit. I switch to my alt, buy all of their listings, sell them at 20x the price on my other server and then raise my listings on my main server back to normal. I could easily walk away...but now crafting these has become a weekly routine. Sure they are profiting in pennies...but now I am having Gil rain down on me like Scrooge McDuck.
One may question the morality of all this. Who is the hero? Who is the villain? I just see it as another day, another dollar, another crazy story from the Market Board.
I hope you've been entertained. We shall see how long this saga plays out. I would love to walk away but now I've become vicious and malicious planter crafter without conscience. I may need an intervention.
