Mages And Healers In The Garlean Army

I'm replaying the ARR story at the moment and encounter healers and thaumaturges in Garlean uniform as enemies quite often, which I kind of forgot until now. This lead to me wondering whether they are just there for gameplay reasons. Fighting only gladiators, lancers and pugilists whenever we encounter them would be stale after all and since the conjurer and thaumaturge AI exists already so why not use it?

Or is there actual official lore to them? Because their existence gives us quite a few questions.

  1. Are they actual mages or are they using some form of magitek to control aether?

  2. If they are actual mages they can't be of pure Garlean blood, since they can't manipulate aether if I remember correctly. So is there magic in Garlemald or are they exclusively from conquered lands?

  3. Are they a consistent part of the army and the tactics employed? If so, there must be training for them etc, right?

  4. And what interests me most: I always had the impression that Garleans look down on magic wielders. Now this could be either my own addition due to their general view of unconquered (read: uncivilized) lands or might have been mentioned in game. In either case, why would they allow magic in their own ranks? Is there some lore to mages in their ranks?

If there isn't any official lore I'd be very interested in the impression of other players like me. I know this is only a small little nitpick that I am looking at here compared to the vast sea of knowledge we have of FFXIV, but somehow I found it to be a very interesting rabbit hole of thoughts.

So, what are your views on magic in Garlean Ranks?
