Still facepalming from my utter stupidity and thought I'd share the story to brighten some of your days.
I've been playing FFXIV for a very long time now, but I had to take a couple of long breaks. One after Stormblood finished, and one just before 5.1 released.
I returned to the game this week in order to get back into the groove of things before Endwalker.
I had a bit of anxiety going into Dungeons, so I queued up for Levelling Roulette, hoping to get Sastasha or some other easy Dungeon to ease back into it.
Alas, I got Bardam's Mettle, a Dungeon I did once and then never again, thanks to my long break after Stormblood.
Managed to humpty-dumpty through most of the dungeon, making quite a few mistakes, but nothing worse than my stupidity in the final boss.
The Final Boss has a mechanic where you get knocked back, and a bunch of circle AoEs start on the outer edge and begin to just automatically move clockwise.
But, I thought it was a mechanic that spawns the circle underneath a player, and follows them around.
So, being the nice teamplayer I am, I continue to run around the outside of the arena so none of my teammates get blasted.
After about 10 of the things I start thinking "Man this is one loooooooooong mechanic" until finally realising that I've been sprinting circles around the arena, doing zero DPS, when I could have just moved inwards and kept attacking the boss.
I can just imagine my team looking at this MNK running away in circles from these easily-avoidable AoEs for about 20 seconds thinking "WTF is that guy doing...??"
Sheepishly gave my "Thanks for the run" and left in embarrassment once we were done.
