Inspired by a comment a friend of mine made while we were in the Sea of Clouds.
A future method of introducing instanced housing could be to use the styling of a floating island, with a little airship dock on each plot. The airship would act as the method of travel between floating islands. There could be a Friends List tab, an FC Members tab (perhaps specific to an FC owned Island), and a Party Members tab for quick access, but otherwise access specific plots/islands through a (searchable?) list Apartment Building Style.
A similar concept could work with literal islands and boats.
Allow players to upgrade the size of their island/plot, and the size of the house on it, etc, or, if server limitations allowed, let them add multiple personal house islands to their plot with a mechanic to travel between them quickly.
It would create an incredible gil sink to help keep the economy's inflation down. Plus, this system would allow the currently existing housing system to remain as the Exclusive-feeling type of housing, due to the neighborhoods.
