My partner and I started playing FFXIV together several months ago, agreeing to not advance in the story quests unless we were playing together. We finished the Realm Reborn campaign, and now it's like pulling teeth to get him to play with me. I really love the game (especially crafting! and being a bunny!), but he has a spiel of complaints of steadily increasing length about the lack of immersion, the tediousness of fetch quests, his disinterest in the way the story is presented, the fact that teleportation messes with the sense of world size, the fact that race choice is strictly cosmetic with no distinct cultural plot threads, etc etc. Honestly these complaints seem pretty standard MMO genre fare to me, but he hasn't played an MMO since...Asheron's Call, I think? So he's missed a pretty big swath of genre development.
I know the quest chain between Realm Reborn and Heavensward is notoriously tedious, but I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to drag him kicking and screaming over this plot hump, which will be very annoying, because we've already bought all of the expansions. If I go on with the story without him, I know that he will never play again, so I'm determined to find a way forward.
(I realize that he's coming off as pretty unreasonable in all of this description, but he's on the spectrum, and he has a very particular way that he approaches video games, so I'm used to it. I generally find it to be an amusing quirk about which I tease him.)
So I'm wondering if jumping to an RP server will help him with immersion. When we started the game, we just went with the server that was automatically recommended, only making sure we were on the same one. We're on Faerie (Aether). I've read that Crystal (Mateus) is an RP server, and it's currently in Preferred status. So I'm wondering -- what exactly goes on in an RP server? Is everyone "in character"? Is it like an online LARP? Do people (and here's one of the spectrum quirks) generally use at least okay English standard grammar in chat?
Thanks for any insights!
