I'm a latecomer to FFXIV in that I only started playing in around May 2020. I really had no idea what the game play was like and I chose to be an archer. Archer/Bard (Ranged DPS) is fine and I still have a good time with it and also leveled up all of my DoH/DoL, so it's kept me busy.
About a week ago, (currently I'm mid 60s on my bard, so I'm about half-way through Heavensward), I decided to start a Dark Knight when I ran into the guy in Foundation. For the most part, while a bard, I've just followed the tank and did my damage, and I've only run though each dungeon the one time I needed to to progress the story. Well, when I tried it as a tank it was a nightmare because A) I didn't really know where I was going, and B) I never really paid too much attention to what the tanks were doing, so I failed miserably. In all honestly though, I really saw that I don't really care for the tank role. While I appreciate those who tank, it was obvious to me that I wouldn't really enjoy running ahead, pulling enemies, and absorbing damage while being healed (hopefully).
Then I went back to Gridania and decided to try Conjurer and wow... I REALLY love the role of healer. Being able to do some damage but primarily being responsible for keeping everyone healthy adds a dimension to the game that just wasn't there with bard and forces me to pay much closer attention. I used to dread doing the dungeon content and just wanted to progress through the story and side-quests but now, as a White Mage, I find that I really enjoy ALL of the content.
So for those of you who are also fairly new to FFXIV, don't forget to at least give each of the other two primary roles a try because you might find that you really get a lot more out of the game than you are now!
