I wish Hall of the Novice explained friendly AoEs too

Sometimes when I queue into roulettes as a DPS with a personal AoE—like Ninja—I notice something odd. In dungeons, some tanks seem to deliberately move mobs out of Doton, almost as if they’re intentionally avoiding it.

You might think, “Well, maybe you placed Doton badly,” but I honestly don’t think that’s the case here. I usually wait until the tank has fully established aggro and properly grouped the mobs before placing it—and tanking is actually my main role, so I’m pretty careful about that. Sure, a few times it could just be bad timing or a mismatch between me and the tank. But in several cases, I’ve clearly waited until the tank stopped moving, placed Doton, and then watched them reposition the mobs away from it.

Just to be clear: this is not meant to blame or criticize those tanks. I have a theory instead. I think some of them might simply be unfamiliar with the game and mistake Doton for an enemy AoE, so they instinctively avoid it. And tbh compared to other friendly AoEs, Doton does look especially dangerous lol

That’s what led me to this thought: it might be nice if Hall of the Novice included a short explanation about friendly AoEs as well. I’m not expecting new players to perfectly remember everything they see in HotN. But even just seeing it once—getting some visual familiarity and basic information—seems better than having no idea at all.

I can absolutely understand inexperienced tanks doing this because they’re not used to the game yet. Tbh, I did the same thing when I was new. My very first character in FFXIV was a Paladin, and I constantly hesitated in dungeons, wondering whether that suspicious-looking puddle on the ground was an enemy AoE or a friendly one. One day I finally asked the party if it was a friendly AoE—but no one answered. So I just kept avoiding it like usual. I didn’t realize Doton was a friendly AoE until much later, when I started leveling Ninja myself

Anyway—this has been the rambling post of a poor Ninja who quietly sheds tears every time a tank pulls mobs out of Doton. Thanks for reading. P.S. Someone might ask why I don’t just explain this in-game. I play on a JP data center... and I can't actually speak Japanese. I’m not confident enough to explain something this long through a translator lmao
