Hello there!
I'm a WoW refugee and just started my adventure into the world of XIV last week. I love it, a lot. For some background I was pretty committed to WoW, my guild was really good for a casual guild, and we were always able to complete some pretty challenging content. But things went South when Classic came around and my guild slowly split up.
So here I am. Starting over in a brand new MMO. And I really thought everyone was just circlejerking themselves, but the community really is the fucking best.
I play tank, it's a pretty rough gig sometimes. In WoW, when you'd enter into a dungeon you've never been before...saying "I'm new, be gentle." Generally leads to silence or "don't waste my time." So naturally I was pretty nervous about tanking in XIV.
Well I'm happy to report that not only do people not hate you when you're new. They actually really like talking to you and playing with you. I was doing the first trial against Ifrit and said "I'm new please be gentle. " And was met with a chat log full of people asking me how I liked the game so far and if I'm planning on sticking with it...etc. We joked around about standing in the fire and jumping into the orange circles, it was crazy.
I was standing around in Ul'Dah sorting some gear out and someone came up and randomly started emoting at me (again never happens in WoW unless they want something). They literally just wanted to be friends and they ended up showing me their fat cat mount (which is fucking wild) and all of these cool minions. (a bird that sits on your shoulder!) It was amazing.
This is long. I digress. This games community really is great. I'm sure there's some bad eggs somewhere. But I honestly haven't had this much fun playing an MMO since my WoW guild was still together.
TL;DR: You're all fucking nice as shit!
