I Think I Get It Now

I have had Final Fantasy XIV since shortly after its relaunch as A Realm Reborn. When I first got the game, I thought it was very pretty, but I bounced off of it very quickly and went back to World of Warcraft.

This was something I've done repeatedly over the years. I'd give it a another try and bounce off. I'd get bored of the ARR MSQ which seemed to mostly be teleporting between crystals to talk to people, then teleporting to another crystal to talk to more people, culminating in a longer conversation with another person you teleported to.

I was frustrated that I had to unlock each dungeon through the MSQ or through side quests, since in most games the dungeons are my favorite content.

Not long ago, I managed to finally complete A Realm Reborn and dove into Heavensward. Everyone I'd ever spoken to claimed that this was where the game started to get good...but honestly, although it definitely seemed more interesting, it still seemed like a very slow burn with what seemed like a lot of busywork.

However, today marks the culmination of what has been a week of nearly binging the game after having gotten the itch again. Today, I beat Nidhogg in the The Final Steps of Faith and I finally get it.

WoW has never managed to evoke the emotion I had as I strode calmly through a group of routing soldiers toward a great wyrm while Dragonsong plays in the background. Or the feeling of things paying off as the spirits of Ysale and Haurchefant lend their aid in saving Estinien from Nidhogg's possession.

WoW never made me feel this satisfied before, and I'm eager to head into Stormblood and beyond. This game really is a slow burn, but I'm glad I've finally reached the point in the last week where it clicked with me.
