MMORPGs aren't really known for their gameplay. They are but they aren't. Some people just can't get behind doing a rotation while playing the floor is lava in certain places.
I get that. But this is as good as it's going to get and here's why:
Aside from some earlier content, the game is very intuitively designed. You're never wondering what's going to happen.
Shadowbringer's Leviathan's heads are glowing on the outside? Get in the middle. Glowing in the middle? Get on the outside?
Once you see a mechanic once, you'll always know what to do and that's amazing.
But the best part about it is the thematics. The individual fight thematics are some of the best designed of all time. The game goes full anime every once in a while and it makes the game infinitely more fun.
My favorite examples are the first Diabolos' dps check. It's literally a battle of wills kamehameha fight that's multiple stages long. It's multiple DPS checks back to back with each individual one being harder than the last. It's truly a battle of wills that was nail biting on it's launch.
My favorite heal check is the stack mechanic for Nidhogg. It's enough to make a healer sweat. The amount of damage coming out from Nidhogg's ultimate attack is enough to make unprepared healers wipe even in 2020. It truly feels like you're fighting for your life.
Lastly, I love the Susanoo sword catch mechanic. You get your most durable tank to stand and catch a sword so many times bigger than they are. The pressure of the sword is enough to shred the rest of your party while they fight to push it off.
I think this is as good as it gets. The thematics of the game are immersive, and I don't think anyone can do it better in the format of an MMORPG.
