So a long time ago I preordered this new MMO to play with some of my friends. I rushed to GameStop on release day, picked up my copy, and spent over an hour making my cute catgirl only to learn that all my friends who I’d been banking on playing with, collectively decided to not get the game. I’d been duped! But it happens. I forgot about the game and years later a new friend asked:
“You wanna play FFXIV?”
“Sure. I got the installer somewhere”
And so, during Heavensward I reactivated my account, created a new catgirl character, and cried as I realized Bards became Bow-Mages at level 52.
I had heard of the craziness of 1.0 but I never experienced it. I didn’t think about that original character I had made all those years before. But in the twilight of 4.3 I saw a post someone had made about getting the 1.0 tattoo on their back. I didn’t realize 1.0 characters got a special tattoo. Did my original character still exist? Did they have the tattoo? I looked around the servers and found my 1.0 catgirl still alive and well, and to my excitement, she had the tattoo! To my confusion, she had two classes sub level 10: lvl 1 Pugilist and lvl 3 Gladiator.
I showed this to my friend, and we had a good laugh about it. Then came the words that changed my life.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing if you leveled gladiator all the way to 70, without doing the first quest?”
The gauntlet had been thrown. I was gonna do it. It took time, but I slowly leveled my Gladiator up in low level Guildhests and dungeons with friends who were kind enough to take me in. After over a year on and off I finally reached level 50 Gladiator during Shadowbringers. From here, I started running MSQ roulette every day. Why MSQ Roulette and not Leveling? I didn’t want to take the chance of ending up in an at level dungeon with a Gladiator and not having enough cooldowns to handle the pulls. Since all my tanking experience had been on this Gladiator, I didn’t know the pulls and bosses well enough to want to risk taking up anyone’s time unwillingly. MSQ Roulette, on the other hand, doesn’t pose any real challenge, so I figured it would be a safe place to get a bunch of levels. Completing my Challenge Log and running Beast Tribes in ShB were also a major help. I also took this time to clear out a bunch of side quests. While they don’t give a lot of exp, every little bit helped and I was happy to clean up my map a bit. Occasionally, I’d be able to get another type of roulette with a stacked group of friends, which was always super helpful!
Over the course of my journey to 80, most were happy to hear about my silly challenge. Some were shocked to realize their main tank for the whole run had been a Gladiator. Some complained the Gladiator did better that the tanks with soul stones. Some were annoyed and said that I was wasting their time with my silly meme challenge, and once I was kicked from a Castrum party because I guess no tank was surely better than a Gladiator. But through it all, with the help of my amazing friends and accepting FC Mates, I learned that even a Gladiator can tank Mt. Gulg!
For those curious my defensive skills consisted of: Reprisal, Rampart, Sentinel, Arm’s Length, and Shield Bash cycling. I used Provoke for ranged pulls since I don’t have access to Shield Lob.
TL;DR: I got Gladiator to lvl 80 without accepting the first gladiator quest.
