I really hope this "big announcement" for 2021 isnt just the expansion and nothing else big along side it.
After cutting out:
(SH=Shadowbringers.)
-Actual zone areas within raids, making them just a platform and a boss
-Numerous trials (16 for ARR, 7 for HW, 9 for SB, only 6 so far for SH)
-Numerous dungeons (18 for HW, 15 for SB, only 11 for SH so far)
-Reducing Map dungeons from 7 floors to 5 floors.
-Deleting/not expanding thief map dungeons for SH
-Not creating primal/trial weapons for GNB/DNC
-Not creating all headgear or hairstyles for Hrothgar/Viera
-Skipping All-Saints Wake Seasonal Event.
The reason?
The nearly 20 year old Final Fantasy XI, team is right now pushing out more than they are expected to.
Not only did the FFXI team not skip any seasonal events, but have already announced huge plans for 2021.

we're proud that we were able to bring you the first several entries in The Voracious Resurgence, our all-new storyline that will carry us from August 2020 through the 20th Vana'versary. We were also able to bring you Mandragora Mania, a new twist to the Harvest Festival event, and a variety of other seasonal activities.
...Additionally, we're looking to expand storage options and implement new character growth options for all jobs.

What that means, is they are getting new:
-Story content
-Job/leveling/customization expansions (for all jobs not just some, nothing limited there.)
-New event Mandragora Mania
-Only new content
-Equal attention/gear/glamour/customization for all jobs
-Bonus Campaigns
-Seasonal events
without deleting:
-No discontinuation of any seasonal or regular events
-No cancelation of any content
-No deletion of any quests or content
So, if the FFXI is capable of so much, it begs to question why the XIV constantly complains of server, system, coding and such reasons as to why they cant balance jobs, release content, or fix existing issues.
At this point FFXI has just about everything FFXIV has but significantly more, and running on older systems and coding.
