After about a 12-15h of play (with admittedly a LOT of story and not so much actual combat), I’m still struggling with the PS4 controller buttons. A few things that seem to trip me up:
As a wannabe tank (PLD) all of these have me concerned for dungeons/raids. If I could just nail down the controller, I have little doubt I’ll be an asset, but right now, I’m more than a bit worried that DPS & Healers will be the default tanks bc I’ll derp a button rotation or target selection. I’ve played the game before, but on PC, so the transition is really tripping me up. I’ve read quite a few guides that all helped, so I think it’s really down to being competent without having to focus intently on button combos.
I assume the answer is “stick to one method and then practice, practice, practice,” so I guess I’m at a loss for how long said practice should reasonably take. Am I overly optimistic to think that a day will do much more than have me comfortable with one side of the crossbar (e.g. L2 for an 8-button rotation)? Are we talking about 3-4 days to really get the hang of it? A week? It might take a month to become competent enough to manage 32 buttons well? etc. So looking more for “how long” answers rather than tips (though I’m open to those as well!!)
EDIT: I’m also at lvl 70, so this isn’t a case (sadly) of starting the game from scratch on PS4 and learning with 3 skills

An intuitive understanding of D-pad vs STXO buttons. Neither crossbar “Display Type” seems intuitive enough that I don’t routinely press, say, X when I mean to press down.
More than 16 buttons. I have tried both extended and WXHB. Extended is excellent, but as soon as I try to use it in a ‘high pressure’ situation, there’s a 50/50 chance my brain will freeze.
Targeting! I understand what the buttons do (and won’t do in a particular combination) and it all makes sense. When I’m standing around, I can work it fine, but me in a combat situation and I’m bound to muck it up.
