How Hard Are Ultimates, Actually?

Hello, midcore AST main here, curious about title.

For context, I started playing at the end of August, and PF'ed through Eden's Verse Savage before 5.4. I am currently on E11S enrage with my static. I've seen a number of legends throughout my time playing, and the fact of the matter is, even among those who I know didn't buy their clears, I just haven't been overly impressed.

I've heard that ultimates were this tremendous skill check and show of superior skill or whatever, and having read through or watched videos on them out of curiosity, they do seem difficult, mostly to find a group consistent enough to get through them. But then, I see legends who eat 8 damage downs to the same mechanic on E11S, or legends who can't understand CW / CCW on Umbral Orbs, and it just confounds me how you can understand mechanics like Wormhole Formation but not "One healer goes CW from A, the other healer goes CCW from A".

This isn't me trying to be salty about the people I raid with - Ultimates have always been sort of portrayed as "above me", so to speak, and that only the top players could ever hope to clear them with hundreds of hours of practice and optimization and blah blah blah, but is that really the case? How do ultimates stack up in terms of difficulty to fights like E4S? E8S? E12S? I'm not talking about blind prog or world firsts or anything like that, just getting a clear, pure and simple. Are the DPS checks harder? Is it just that there are multiple Light Rampants per fight so you need a really consistent group that's willing to do the research? And if it's the latter, are ultimates really this boisterous show of skill, or just a show of patience in finding a group that's willing to sit down and do the studying?
