How do you find real community in FFXIV as a sprout? (Coming from OSRS)

Long-time RuneScape player here who fell hard for FFXIV. I’m sitting at about 30 days of playtime and just finished Shadowbringers (genuinely one of the best stories I’ve ever experienced in a game)

The one thing I feel like I’m still missing is a real sense of community, and I’m starting to wonder if I’m approaching it completely wrong.

In OSRS, I can walk up to a stranger, ask what they’re grinding, and end up chatting for hours. It’s got this house party energy. People tend to be casual, open, and social by default. When I try to bring that same energy into FFXIV, it usually goes one of three ways:

  1. they don’t respond

  2. they’re in a tight-knit duo and I feel like I’m interrupting something

  3. The conversation gets unexpectedly flirty fast.

I recently got invited to a small FC that seemed promising. I was hoping for something like a RuneScape clan: people doing content together, casual banter, that kind of thing. Jumped into their Discord and it was… not that. Totally fine if that’s their thing, just not what I was looking for.

I’ve also noticed a vibe on this subreddit (and in game) where social engagement feels almost taboo. I see memes about getting caught looking at someone’s adventurer plate imply that even mild curiosity about another player is impolite. That’s the opposite of the game I came from.

I’m not trying to criticize the community at all. I genuinely love this game and want to be part of it long-term. I just feel like I’m missing something about how people actually connect here. Is it all Discord first? Specific content types? Certain data centers or servers?

How did you find your people in FFXIV?

Thanks!
