I'm a newer player and have recently started tanking more, and like it a lot. However, when I do content and someone else claims the main tank role, I let it slide. I never wanna be that "fighting other tanks for aggro" guy. So I just try to maximize my DPS.
Obviously, in fights with adds, I grab them ASAP. That's brainless. But what of fights with no adds?
I play PLD and DRK. On my DRK, I got synced to 70 during a trial and didn't really know what to do outisde of DPSing as hard as I could, so I'd occasionally throw TBN on the MT if I saw that his mitigation CDs were down. My logic was that I was helping lower the damage taken by the raid, which is my job anyway, right? Plus if TBN is fully used, I get a free Edge of Darkness anyway so it's DPS neutral. I also throw out Reprisal when I can. Am I supposed to be doing that?
On my PLD, I haven't used him too much in trials or raids, b ut I was considering using Cover on the MT if I saw that his HP was low, but then I was worried that it would mess with the healers by changing who was taking damage without really announcing it.
So basically, what are my responsibilities as OT in single-target fights? Throw out my own mitigators to help out the MT, or just focus 100% on DPS?
