Hot Take: Zenos Duels Were Written By A Dm Who Is Repeatedly Under-estimating His Players.

Every Zenos duel goes as such:

You fight Zenos, you're winning, Deus ex Machina happens, Zenos wins.

The first few times it makes sense, Zenos has ultimate attacks the WoL never actually bothers to figure out how to counter, so rather than getting stronger, the WoL just brings his Adventurer Raid Group(tm) and kicks his ass. Ok, sure.

The third duel with "Zenos" though literally goes like this: Ahahaha, you are fighting the strongest warrior, Zenos, but now on steroids, because he's Ascian possessed! You can't possibly beat him- oh shit you're beating him. Can I see your character sheet? Oh, um, ok well... you kill him I guess... BUT HE GETS BACK UP! Oh no wait, yea you're probably just going to kill him again. Uh- YOU PASS OUT! No, there's no save roll this time, you just pass out.

That's exactly how it goes. It's exactly a DM realizing his BBEG isn't actually strong enough and his story is about to come to a violent, very early end. So instead the DM just makes up a serious of Deus Ex Machina's until something sticks.
