So I’ve just finished Heavensward (including the chapters leading to the end of the Dragonsong Wars) and cannot believe it took me so long to play through such an amazing story.
For context, I started FFXIV back in 2013 but never managed to break through ARR despite multiple attempts of pushing through the content. Recently though, I finally managed to get through the dreaded 100 filler quests, and in spite of the DPS queues and copious amounts of dungeon napping on my dragoon (that’s what Jumping is for right?), I made it to the end of Heavensward and couldn’t be happier.
I’m a long time Final Fantasy fan (VII, VIII and XV are my favourites) and this was right up there as far as a true FF experience was concerned. The characters were endearing (<3 Ysayle / Estinien / Aymeric), the plot was engrossing, and the pacing was refreshing (following the slog of the ARR filler quests). Seeing Ysayle riding on Hraesvelgar and jumping off to perform her final transformation to Shiva stands as one of the coolest (literally) scenes I’ve witnessed in the franchise, and the fight with Thordan and his knights had me smiling from ear to ear as I went face to face with “The Knights of the Round” summon in primal form.
I am grateful that I decided to persist with this game and am super excited to see what awaits in Stormblood. If the quality of this storyline and experience is anything to go by this far, I’m in for a treat!
