I picked this game up because it's Final Fantasy and I had yet to try it. I got a lot of stuff I was expecting (Morbols, Imperials, Gilgamesh, Morbols, great character design, and my favorite, Morbols) which is great.
I also got something I wasn't expecting. I got to watch characters love and care for each other in a purely platonic way. I get tired of the "boy loves girl, does dumb shit" angle.
They make bad choices and fix them. They make good choices that seem bad on the surface (Urianger) and they rarely hare off to do a dumb thing without scoping it out first.
Watching the main NPCs grow and change to reflect their experiences and not being beholden to an ill-fated love story are really the main standouts of this game for me.
