I'm an older gamer. I cut my teeth in MMORPGs with the original Everquest and Ultima Online back in the 90's. Time is precious with a family, job and responsibilities so whilst I can still play those old games I don't necessarily have the time to commit to them anymore.
I've always loved Final Fantasy (started on the SNES) and this game lets me scratch some of the itch those older games have left behind but I'm struggling to find my place in the community. The fact that this is largely a sort of lobby based game hasn't helped too much. The MSQ is largely a solo affair that actually prohibits you from grouping for many of the quests which has so far left the only groups I join being those I'm randomly assigned in the duty finder.
As I'm sure you're aware, in the duty finder groups outside of saying "hello" at the beginning and "thanks for the group" at the end, there really isn't too much communication. Everyone also seems to want to speed run everything which leaves me watching YouTube videos of every dungeon before I join because I know the mechanics won't be explained by the group and everyone just wants to sprint to the end.
I joined the novice chat just to have people to talk with but this games seems to skew a fair bit younger and a lot of the general conversations that occur there go way over my head.
I don't like anime, I don't like furry stuff, I don't care for the in game festivals or glamours or making pretty characters or any of that. I'm old and I'm grumpy.
I've finished up Heavensward and before I go through Stormblood I've been working on crafting but I'm starting to wonder if this game is a good fit for me. The fact that every time my wife sees me playing there's always two bunny girl characters wearing very little armour standing face to face in the cities has also made me feel slightly embarrassed to be playing.
Just wondering, do any old grognards like me play this? Or am I destined to complete this game on solo mode?
(Edit: Not trying to attack anyone here. You do you. I just want to log on, chat with friends and kill some bad guys.)
