Sorry if this is an old, dead idea that someone else more prolific on the forums has already brought up, but I want to address two pesky subjects:
1) Grand Companies still hold a peripheral relevance to those with FC's, Fashionistas, Crafters and Completionists, but there's an untapped potential to help address the second point.
2) Armor Chest Clutter. Even at max level the physical DPS have 4 separate gear sets for a total of 7, and who knows what the gear will look like with the introduction of new Jobs in 6.0
I've been working on leveling my battle jobs, and it's been a nightmare keeping my armory chest clean. I dreaded getting my DoW's past 50, knowing they would lose their shared gear sets, and I've been relying on the Rowena's Representatives for tombstone gear to level with.
It wasn't until my last 4 jobs that I realized that the GC weapons are competitive against the Augmented Ironworks weapons, which would have saved me a lot of time and headache running irrelevant dungeons to grind Poetics when I could have spent some of my piles of GC seals for at least a portion of my gear.
This got me to thinking: Why isn't this more of a thing? People still use the GC's for various purposes, and they clearly had plans for 8 ranks higher than the current max. One of the conveniences they originally intended for the GC's is the universal gear sets, which can be enhanced by wearing multiple pieces or by the use of sanctions.
Why can't we have this at each max level interval? 50, 60, 70, 80 and prospectively 90. It could be baked into the still somewhat relevant GC presence, and cut armor bloat by consolidating all your lesser used jobs into a single gear set.
In my mind it works like this:
2nd Serpent/Storm/Flame Commander's set;
Custom Design Weapons, Hat, Gloves, Chest, Legs, Belt, Feet, and maybe generic designed Right Side.
-Minimum iLvL for all current patch content with a full complement of less than optimal stat values to facilitate the casual experience.
-A new set of sanctions from the GC Mage for specific stat spreads. i.e. Sanction of Dexterity/Strength/Tenacity/Mind/Intelligence. Each sanction would boost whatever main stat you wanted to a competitive parameter for 2 hours, and could be refreshed or overwritten by talking to the Mage again.
