Free Companies And Asserting Healthy Boundaries

I’ve been playing FFXIV for a few months now. Recently completed Shadowbringers and started an alt for fun. I’m encountering similar issues here that I did my first go around when it comes to free companies, and I thought I should ask on here what I can and should expect from them.

I’ve also seen discussions on here where FC leaders have said they found it annoying when people just spontaneously leave without saying why, so I thought I’d share a perspective here and an issue that I keep bumping up against.

A lot of FC leadership are really warm and inviting, which at the outset is a great thing. But that warmness frequently shifts to suffocating quickly. I understand that a lot of FC leaders have already maxed out their jobs and gotten a lot of what there is to get in the game, but sometimes I think their boredom translates to their using newbies to stay active. I’m so very appreciative of their help when I do need it, but often I find people trying to answer questions I never asked. I’ve been tracked down and interrupted in the middle of easy, low level quests by FC leadership inviting me to parties so they can “help.” I’ve made nonchalant remarks about classes I’m interested in playing only to end up watching FC leadership show off every skill for every class. I’ve been told to play how I want to play, then pressured to go do this quest or unlock that and not pay attention to anything else.

It puts newbies in a difficult position, because we’re truly grateful for the invitation, the hospitality, the assistance (should we need it), the benefits, and the community (when we’re available), but we also don’t want every interaction to become an ordeal, especially if we have a limited amount of time to play, and because there’s a hierarchy it feels impolite to say anything.

So I guess questions for consideration are: - What obligations do I have to my FC? - How can I assert healthy boundaries in an FC? - How can I find an FC that is appropriate for someone who likes playing independently sometimes? - What’s the best way to leave an FC that doesn’t have good boundaries? - Has anyone else encountered this and, if so, how did you respond?
