To start with you will need at least one submarine with surveillance stats of >170 in order to obtain the Cocobolo lumber required to purchase the schematic from the board in the workshop. I have 3 subs with ostensibly better than adequate stats and it took me 7 months to get the 18 pieces of Cocobolo Lumber to obtain the schematic.
After obtaining the schematic I decided to Modify my all Coelacanth submarine. The materials included ~650 Coke, 486 hardened sap, 108 Cryptomeria logs (from sub missions) and 108 pure titanium ore (also from sub missions) among other large quantities of farmable mats.
Now for the FUN part: to make the Modified pieces – Hull, Stern, Bow and Bridge – you must first purchase a Frame for each piece from the Materials Merchant in the housing areas. The purchase price is an appropriate Hull, Stern, Bow or Bridge piece. For my Coelocanth sub I needed to give the Materials Merchant a Coelocanth piece to get the appropriate Coelocanth Frame. If you use the Dismantle option in the Submersible Preferences menu and retrieve the pieces of your existing submarine you will lose all the Experience and stat increases you have previously achieved with it and your new Modified sub will be starting over at level Zero!
Alternatively, you can build (or purchase from the Auction Board) a new lowest level sub (Shark Class) and substitute those pieces for your already high level sub. You can make these exchanges all at once and not lose any ranking for that submersible. You then trade in your leveled pieces for the Frames and you are ready to make the Modified Sub. Once you have made the Modified pieces, you trade them with the Shark Class pieces and your finished sub will be the level of your original submersible – I started with a level 70 all Coelocanth sub and ended with a level 70 all Modified Coelocanth Sub.
Surveillance, Range and Speed stats are all higher on the Modified Subs but I am not certain yet that they are worth the work and expense involved. AND the Cocobolo Lumber drop rate is hideous.
