I've been getting asked for years by various people on the various MMOs I've played off and on (WoW, ESO, GW2), "Hey man, when are you going to play FF14?" I'd always deflect that with statements such as, "Oh I don't have the time," or "the game doesn't look all that good," or "I'm not a JRPG fan."
Well I finally caved, played through about five levels on a trial account, found that I was enjoying myself, and then bought the complete edition later that day. Here are some highlights of how my first month has gone:
-Spent my first 3 hours on the character creator wrestling with who and what I wanted to start as. My trial had been spent as a Hyur Gladiator, but I did not want to start a new MMO as a tank. I eventually chose Hrothgar because I'm fresh from GW2 and developed a bit of a Charr obsession over there. Also went with Lancer because I vaguely remembered there being a lot of Dragoon memes and I was familiar with Dragoons from one of the only other FF games I've played, Tactics.
-While learning the wonderful art of the pokey stick in Gridania I was set upon by a Lalafell wearing what I recognized as a wide eyed fish man costume I had seen on the Square store page. They asked me if I was new and I told them, yes. I had just started playing that day. They proceeded to hand me 30 boiled eggs and 50k gil, welcoming me to the game. It made me very happy. Thank you little fish person.
-During my Gridanian travels I learned what Fates were. I found a fate in some ruins whose name I cannot remember to kill an imp the size of a Suburban. I though "oh I can take it" and proceeded to get my face beat in. Thankfully a pair of passing Vierra decided to revive me and aid me in my revenge. Thank you Tall Ears and Bunny Biatch.
-Realized what my 20+ friends meant when they all had told me "don't judge the game based on the AAR story, its a lot of fetch quests". I thought they were exaggerating. They were not. That was a lot of running around.
-Progressed quickly through the story fumbling my way in and out of dungeons. Everyone was very supportive and helpful when I said I was new. I was given relatively precise instructions for anything more complicated than "dont stand in fire" and what a lot of terms meant. I did have one rude tank when I did Ifrit, but the other group members rebuked them without any prompting.
-Made it to level 50 and completed the AAR story. Found that despite the tedium I quite enjoyed it. I may have a crush on Gaius.
-Almost suffocated myself laughing too hard at the Hildibrand quests...particularly Godbert's appearance. I'm giggling just thinking about it.
And that was where I left off after my first 30 days. All in all a very positive experience. I think I'm going to like it here!
