Disclaimer: This post it just to share my experience and opinion in the trial so far.
I was starved for an MMORPG after quitting BDO for the 2nd time. I looked at many other MMORPGs but none really caught my eye, but I kept hearing good things about FFXIV, but the subscription model and tab-targetting was putting me off the game. A few months passed, and I finally decide to give the trial a try after watching some videos on the game.
First impression on the main menu, I haven't played any FF games before but I have extensive knowledge from watching others playing the series (But I am starting to play other FF games now!), and the FF prelude starts playing as I fiddled with my settings and created a Duskwight Arcanist with the intention to later become a Scholar. From the moment I heard the prelude, I knew that this was gonna be good. I decided to join Jenova and then off I go to experience the world. I did every side quest i saw along the way till level 20 just to save the quests for other classes to level. Currently, I haven't reached the level 35 cap yet, but I'm level 21, and dabbled a little with fishing, cooking, and alchemy with plans to start off all the classes and guilds, taking my time to experience the world to the fullest. I was just overwhelmed by so much to do in a good way, that I experienced the joy I had in MMORPGs when I was a kid discovering the genre for the first time.
Although I haven't experience all of the trial, I'm so eager to share my experience and opinion. Compared to BDO, it was a breath of fresh air. I have experienced no micro-transaction or felt the need to. I wasn't pressured to catch up. There was no need to grind for hours and hours everyday just to get nothing. There were no ego inflated pk-ing dickheads with a superiority complex. No needing to keep my PC up 24/7. No needing to gamble with unfair RNG. No excessive lag. And no needing to worry about time (Sorry about the BDO rant lmao, just had to get it off my chest).
What I experienced in FFXIV was pure unadulterated joy and glee. From the characters' dialogue and personality to lurking and seeing what players are chatting about (A funny one I found is a bunch of players with instrument playing meme songs in Limsa Lominsa). Although the combat is tab-targetting, I found it really fun because of the effects, and it would probably be even more fun when I get more skills to start juggling with everything. And I'm enjoying it more than BDO's "amazing combat" at the moment because there is no insane amount of lag where my character gets teleported back just to be grabbed and killed in one combo, and where pvp is just determined by who can CC first. As for the story and questing, although it is a bit stale because I'm still only in ARR, I'm still enjoying it (I'm pretty easy to please). I like taking my time to soak in the world and read the dialogue. And I found that lifeskilling was pretty fun, unlike BDO where AFK-ing is involved, FFXIV got me really engaged with what little I experienced so far, with balancing between durability, quality, and progress. And unlike BDO, I still have time in my life to, well, have a life and other hobbies along with playing FFXIV.
Sorry if this post just turned into bashing BDO, but this was just my experience transitioning over and the amount of fun I had. Overall, I'm going to experience the trial to the fullest and then buy FFXIV when it's one sale. I hope that my experience will get even better in the future! Thank you for reading this long post!
