A third party group is sending requests to the server which results in back-up for server. In the end, there are intense problems with connection stability and log in abililty.

But it's more fun to think of it as China getting some revenge on Japan by hacking in the FFXI servers and stealing gil from regular players who are logged out. Although, it's not true.

The idea behind a DDOS is to use all available bandwidth that the target has so no other queries can go through.

In dumb: imagine trying to force 9 million gallons through a pipe designed for 5 gallons. That's a DDOS.

But yeah, he's got the idea. Not exactly 'hacking', since there is on real intrusion, but an 'attack' in that its causing problems with the network. ANd pissing off everyone.
