I do think that the Devs should be in more open communication with the community and listen less to stuff that is so hostilely negative.
The Story of Dawntrail? Pretty good, couple of hiccups here and there but overall very solid. I loved the overall theming of the story and the major complaints I see are from people who are nitpicking or they simply don't enjoy the story. Every negative complaint I've seen has been vitriolic, calling it the WORST thing ever, but it's middling at best and they're looking at it at a purely surface level. (Genuinely thinking some of the more vitriolic hate for Wuk Lamat is possibly related to her voice actress, even if her writing is a bit iffy at certain points)
Mechanics? AMAZING. Actually challenging. Genuinely fun to watch my HP PLUMMET when I pull a spicy mob and Warrior's Mitigation alone don't carry me. The Trial fights are VERY well done and I love the new Psuedo-Warning Castbars saying "HEY THE BOSS IS DOING THIS!" PLEASE put that into older content. The only critique I would have is during the Normal Mode trials, show off more warning AOE markers when criss-crossing AOEs are occurring, like during one of the phases during Trial 1.
The big issue I currently have is that there seems to be a distinct difference in between what the developers want in some places and what the players want, such as the dye channels on certain glamour piece. (Fat Cat Hoodie second dye channel being the metal rings being one such offender of this.) I wish that the Developers would more openly explain the changes they're making when they're making and what specifically is being listened to. Telling players "Based on Feedback" is too vauge when it comes to things like Viper being changed. What feedback is being taken into consideration? Where is the feedback coming from? Why is this specific feedback causing the change to happen? I would love it if the developers were more specific in the details, allowing less chance of players considering this to be "The worst possible thing."
tl;dr. Dawntrail is great, but more specific communication from the development team would be appreciated.
